UEL’S cutting edge

The University of East London has revitalised their Print Centre with the latest print and finishing technology from Xerox and Duplo and hope this will make them ‘One of the most cutting edge printing facilities in Higher Education in the UK’.
Their Docklands Campus facility, which was formed in 2006 as a consolidation of three former print centres at their Barking, Stratford and Docklands sites, works in 5 year technology updates and Steve Marlow, Head of Print Services, explains the brief for the current cycle of changes.

“We wanted to increase our production efficiency and offer a broader service and product spectrum to our customers. Our brief for the printing side was primarily focussed on workflow speeds, improvement in print quality and creating cost efficiencies. With the finishing side it was more about finding improvements in automation and intelligence, we were keen to introduce variable data printing in-house as well.”

In December 2010 the Print Centre went through a process of full regeneration, including a new Xerox Colour 1000 Press, two Xerox Nuvera 144 EA Production Systems, a Xerox 700 digital colour press, wide format printing plus a Digital System 5000ProSCC bookletmaking line from Duplo.

The Duplo modular system includes a DSF-5000 intelligent sheet feeder with barcode reader for variable print, plus an antistatic feeding feature. The sheets then enter the SCC-PRO inline top and tail slitter and creaser, which in turn feeds the set into Duplo’s DBM-500/T bookletmaker and fore-edge trimmer. The books are then finished with an ASM-500 squareback device.

“At IPEX we were actively seeking a bookletmaker that suited our new print production model. We were impressed with the build quality and modularity of the Duplo system and we felt the line could be tailored for our needs. We were particularly impressed with the squareback finish, traditionally higher education printed prospectuses and booklets can be quite thick, so the inline spine square along with the SCC crease has made a massive difference to the quality of our books,” comments Steve.

The university offers a vast array of different course programmes, from architecture to media to teaching, and with this there is demand for large amounts of different types of print work passing through the Print Centre every day. This requirement to become more reactive, flexible and efficient was a major driver in the upgrade of equipment.
“We find the Duplo system very intuitive to set-up with the PC front end, and the fact that you can pull up pre-programmed jobs that configure automatically without the need for tools is a major factor. Previously we had to change set-up between jobs with socket sets and spanners, as far as labour is concerned that is dead time, now the Duplo changes at the touch of a button,” says Bob Ellis, Principal Finisher.

“Now we have this cutting edge technology in place, we are looking at even more targeted marketing for the university with the use of variable data print. We have a mini prospectus project that we are developing, which we can run two-up on a digital sheet and stitch on the Duplo using the front barcode readers to ensure complete integrity with each book. We are also looking at QR codes as a form of marketing. These kinds of projects are now the future for this print facility, and we believe that we can drive the university forward with this new investment in production equipment,” concludes Steve.

Clould Printing from Mobile Devices via Google Clould

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Google Cloud Print enables printing from a wide variety of Google web and mobile applications from a variety of devices to virtually any printer.2,3 There's no need for print drivers or additional software.

Simply associate your printers with a Google Account—preexisting or new—to start printing. You can add your HP ePrint-enabled printer (HP Photosmart, HP Officejet, HP Officejet Pro, HP LaserJet Pro) or any PC connected to the network to your Google Account with the printer's unique email address. When you're ready to print, simply select from the list of printers associated with your account.
You can send a print job to the printer you've chosen when you want—whether the printer is in front of you, in another room or across the country. And you'll have virtually the same experience as if you were physically connected to the printer. Print your favorite vacation photo to the closest printer to you for quick-and-easy sharing. Or, send your business presentation to the printer at your desk. It's that easy.2

Tips from Purbooks Print & Design

Purbrooks Print & Design  http://www.purbrooks.co.uk/ have both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.  Purbrooks offer these tips to become greener in their free spring 2011 "Inform" publication.

• Specify environmentally-friendly paper – preferably recycled or mixed sources and FSC accredited.

• Use white paper, but only as white as is needed – less bleaching required.

• Avoid tinted or brightly coloured stocks as these materials cannot be recycled easily. Equally, coated paper is not as easily recycled as uncoated.

• Design for minimal ink coverage and minimise bleed off the page.
Using fewer printing colours makes a job less complex and may save on energy costs.

• Use a lighter weight of paper stock – it saves resources, may use a lot less energy to produce and can give you substantial savings on postage and distribution costs.

• Avoid processes such as lamination and spot UV which make the finished product difficult to recycle and are costly in terms of energy and materials. Try our in-line coating and spot machine varnishes as alternatives.

• Avoid perfect binding for smaller documents, as the glue used makes recycling more difficult.

Print Efficiently event announced for June

Suppliers involved in all aspects of printing and finishing are preparing for a joint event in June, called Print Efficiently. The intention is to show how integration can deliver efficiencies.

This will be held over two consecutive weeks, 7 – 9 and 14 – 16 June, at the Intelligent Finishing Solutions showroom in Perivale, west London. Both Wednesdays will be open into the evenings.

Companies involved will include key partners Horizon, Kodak and Komori, together with Airtec, Kern Mailing Systems, Lake Image, MagnetNotes, Middleton Paper, Nordson, Pomeroy Press Room Products, Renz and Shuttleworth MIS Solutions.

An open demonstration environment will offer visitors the opportunity to see how digital and litho processes can be complimentary and also compare and contrast quality and efficiencies on a variety of printing tasks, run lengths and stock types.

Pat Holloway, Kodak UK marketing manager said: 'This is about strong partners working together to support print companies and advise them on ways of growing their business. This event will give the printer the opportunity to glean ideas and tips on improving efficiencies on a job from origination to completion. Visitors will have the opportunity to see a complete workflow with jobs arriving via our web to print solution Storefront through the digital and litho process to binding and finishing.'

Bryan Godwyn, joint managing director of Intelligent Finishing Solutions, said: ‘For us this event is the perfect complement to Northprint; it is highly solution-focused and, because we have the benefit of such a wide resource base and more time available, it means that visitors really can get to grips with end to end production processes that will help them to drive their printing efficiency.’

The venue is IFS' showroom at: 11 Aintree Road, Perivale, Middlesex UB6 7LE. Tel: 020 8997 8053.

A pre-registration website will go live after Easter, at: http://www.printefficiently.com/
